Spina bifida is a permanently disabling birth defect that affects approximately seven out of every 10,000 babies born each year. Spina bifida can result in varying levels of paralysis, as well as learning difficulties and/or other health problems. Each of the over 60 million U.S. women of childbearing age is at risk of having a baby born with spina bifida. Research has shown that if a woman who plans to become pregnant or is pregnant takes 400 micrograms of folic acid every day, she reduces her risk of having a baby with spina bifida by as much as 70%.
The Spina Bifida Association of the Delaware Valley (SBADV) is a non-profit organization committed to promoting public awareness of spina bifida and to enhancing the lives of those affected by it. The SBADV is a volunteer-based organization run by individuals who donate their time and their resources. The SBADV serves Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, Delaware, Philadelphia, Burlington, Gloucester, and Camden counties.
In October, the SBADV will be doing its annual “Adopt-a-Ghost” program, selling paper ghosts at various schools and retail stores throughout the Delaware Valley. The SBADV will also be hosting a “Dance to the Music” Fundraiser on October 20, 2010, at the McCall Golf and Country Club in Upper Darby. Click here for more information on the SBADV and its events.
